Animals are generally subjected to cruelty such as over-loading, sore-neck swollen neck and other physical infirmities and as and when such instances come to the notice of our Inspectors the offenders are prosecuted under the provisions of P.C.A. Act. Our Inspectors are authorized to prosecute offenders and they patrol the areas where the offences are committed and bring the offenders before the Court of Law. Cases of transportation of cattle and fowl in an overcrowded fashion or in a cruel manner are also booked.Complaints received from members of public regarding infliction of cruelty to animals are promptly attended to and remedial action taken. Public may contact on Tele.No 25611628/25612160 and give their complaints to the Duty Inspector between 10.00 a.m and 5,00 p.m. on all working days except second Saturdays and Sundays.

Distress service: On all working days a member of our field staff will be on duty at our office between 10.a.m.and 5.00.p.m. to receive information that may be given either in person or over the phone by the members of the public about animals in distress and requiring attention. On receiving such calls prompt action is taken by our rescue team.

Ambulance Service: To attend to distress calls, S.P.C.A operates two ambulance vans .We lift wounded and sick animals and transport them to our shelter for care and treatment.

Animal Health Centre: This Free Veterinary Clinic provides sterilization, free treatment for sick and wounded animals and free Anti Rabies Vaccines for the dogs with the help of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (Animal Welfare Division) financial assistance are performed on pet dogs also. No fee is charged.

Hostel for pet: SPCA runs a Dogs’ Hostel to take care of pets during the temporary absence of the owners for a short period. We have 22 separate cells. Each cell is spacious, safe and well cleaned. The Hostel is surrounded by verdant trees and is constantly watched by an Attendant. Each Hostel inmate will have bread and milk at morning and rice with meat at noons. We receive a nominal donation for kennel service.

Animal Birth Control Project: Next to Dogs’ Hostel is the dormitory for stray dogs. Each dormitory is larger than the Hostel cells and is occupied by five boarders. These stray dogs are brought by the Corporation authorities for sterilization. One of the most interesting and useful activities of the SPCA is the animal birth control project by which birth control operations are performed on dogs and cats. For this, we have a Veterinary Doctor and air-conditioned theatre. After the dogs are well recuperated they would be released at their haunts. Operations are performed on pet dogs also. No fee is charged.

Free Veterinary Health Camp: Realizing that even animals have the right to live free from pain and disease SPCA Regularly conducts Free Veterinary Health Camp. Dogs are immunized (Anti Rabies Vaccine). De-Ticking injections are given free of cost. General Health Tonics, deworming medicines and appetite stimulants are also given to the owners to be administered to the animals.

Humane Education: Modern education has no doubt wrought miracles and proved that nothing is beyond human intelligence. But how much nicer would it have been if we had also learnt to be humane and to respect each other’s feelings and do unto others as we would like to be done to ourselves.

Let all of us who believe that every living being be it man or animal has a right to live a life free from fear and pain strive to spread Humane Education .To inculcate “Kindness to Animals” in the minds of children and to create an awareness about animal welfare, we have been conducting every year competitions for them in Painting and Oratory.
The Society appeals to Educational Institutions, service-minded Organizations and others to extend their co-operation in this task, the importance and urgency of which cannot be ignored any longer.

Painting Competition: As part of our efforts to promote Humane Education, the annual painting competition for school children is conducted annually. In the adage “catch them Young” is aptly applicable if even at a young age, children and students, are imbibed with the laudable motive of animal welfare. A lot of students from various schools of Chennai city enthusiastically participate in the competition. A number of prizes are given to encourage the students.

Animal Welfare Fortnight Celebrations: Animal WelfareFortnight is celebrated by S.P.C.A annually between 14th and 28th January. Throughout the fortnight stray animals are fed free. Animal Birth Control and Anti Rabies Program are implemented with added vigour and medical aid is extended during the fortnight.
As part of fortnight celebrations an Oratorical competition for school children is also held. The topics for competition are chosen in such a way to kindle kindness towards animals in their heart. A large number of students participate from various schools of Chennai city. Besides three prizes for the first three places, a number of consolation prizes are given to the participants to encourage them. The prizes are given away to the winners during the `Annual Day` Celebrations.

FRIEND TO ANIMALS: A scout/guide is always looked upon as friend to animals. A first hand knowledge of what constitutes cruelty to animals, what types of cruelties are generally inflicted on them and what should be done, when cases of cruelties are noticed is essential to a scout/guide. The scouts and guides are trained by our veterinary doctor as per the syllabus and proficiency badges ``Friend to Animals`` is awarded to them.

GRANT IN AID: All above-mentioned activities are carried out with the grants from the State and Central Governments and the Animal Welfare Board of India. Hence we express our sincere thanks and gratitude to them and also to the Public who donate generously and encourage us all the way to carry on our services unabated.
