The objects
of the Society are the prevention
and suppression of cruel and
improper treatment of animals
and amelioration of their condition
generally throughout the city
of Chennai.
The means employed for the attainment
of those objects are:
1. The agency of paid Officers
whose duty is to watch, warn
or prosecute as needful all
persons found guilty of inhumanity
to animals
2. The provision of infirmary
for the treatment of animals
3. The provision of refuge for
animals incapacitated for work
by reason of old age or otherwise
It does not restrict itself
with prevention of cruelty alone
but goes further. It takes intensive
care of animals and pets. To
take care of animals and birds
the Animal Welfare Board of
India was established in 1962.
The prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Act was enacted by the
Parliament on 26-12-1960. The
S.P.C.A Inspectors are entrusted
with powers for prosecuting
offenders under this Act.
